The Families Stage Play: Emotion, Conversation, and an Unforgettable Experience

The Families stage play was more than just a performance,  it was an experience.

Produced by HUG Media Concept and written and Directed by Godwin Harrison, the stage play brought together powerful storytelling, emotional performances, social commentary, and unforgettable moments that kept audiences fully engaged from beginning to end.

Held at Alliance Française Port Harcourt, The Families welcomed creatives, students, media personalities, advocates, and lovers of theatre who came ready to laugh, reflect, learn, and connect.

What made this recent production even more special was the way it reaffirmed the very first performance of The Families, which took place in April 2018 at the 34 Brigade Artillery Obinze Barracks.

Just like it did back then, the story once again created a raw emotional connection with the audience. Some audience members could not stop talking about certain scenes long after the performance had ended.

One of the biggest highlights of the play was the Intersex storyline, which sparked meaningful conversations around identity, acceptance, and representation. It was bold, important, and one of the reasons the production stood out so strongly.

The cast delivered exceptional performances that made every family dynamic feel real and relatable. Mr. Ben, played by Daerego Ekine, and Mrs. Ben, played by Joy Ozor, perfectly captured the elite family lifestyle, while Mr. Paulicap, played by Preye Okuro, and Mrs. Paulicap, played by Chimazuru Goodness, represented the everyday  Nigerian Toxic family experience who had an intersex child. Mrs. Okoro, the deeply religious single mother played by Onofere Blessing, also stood out with a memorable performance. Their energy, emotion, and authenticity earned loud applause, emotional reactions, and standing ovations from the audience.
